My experience was terrible
After we moved to Wetzel County, I was encouraged to enroll my child in Paden City High School. "Small school, great school!" That was the quotes I got. Unfortunately, that hasn't exactly been the case. While I expected some transition slippage of my child's grades because of the move, they managed in less than six months to take a previously "A" student down to almost failing. It quickly became apparent that their "extra help for students" consisted of a half hour in the morning before classes. This doesn't do a student a lot of good, if he or she needs help in more than one class. I have yet to see any of my child's teachers suggest that they would stay after school to help them out. It also quickly became apparent that this schools main concern was enrolling students to save the school from closure. The county has lost students over the past decade, and it's no secret that Paden City is the logical choice of schools to close. So, to get their numbers up and make the school board rethink the idea of closing the school, Paden City High is doing everything in it's power to attract students. However, it's not doing the right things. Many of the teachers here have been here forever. While they may be "bad" teachers, the county can't get rid of them because they have tenure. Any suggestion that maybe the school has a "problem teacher" is met with "It must be your kid slacking off." You'll never get a teacher to admit that maybe their approach isn't working for a particular child. And because of the small number of students, there are only certain teachers a student can get a class from. Therefore, if your child has a problem with his math teacher, too bad. There is no other math teacher that your child can take or you can request for your child. Your only alternative is to transfer your child to another school, unless your willing to risk him or her failing. While the school claims to have high scores on state tests, I wouldn't read too much into this. Because it has so few students, I'm not sure you can get a accurate judgement of their curriculum or their test scores. Also, because the county is looking to eventually shut down this school, funding for it has been slow at best. The building while clean, needs a major revamp. The football fields restrooms for use by the public are just deplorable. The concession stand for the ball field is antiquated at best. The bleachers are a hazard for anyone wishing to sit in them to see a game. The student lockers, well we won't even go there, except to say that the school has lost so many students that each child can now have two lockers.
Do yourself a favor, either choose Magnolia High, which has approximately the same pupil/student ratio, or even better, take your child to Tyler Consolidated.
I will give the students parents credit. The boosters are trying everything they can to raise funds and keep this school alive. But like the town, the school is slowly dying. The parents may be fighting a losing battle. For the time being, the school board has been convinced to keep the school open, but it is just a matter of time before the state steps in and says it must close. Unless some new industry comes to town to revive it, the whole area, including the school, is doomed to a downward spiral. Without a major injection of funds from the county, this school cannot survive as a modern school that meets today's student needs to excell. And in all probability, those funds are not forthcoming.
